Description Harley Davidson 1947 “U” 1209 cc side valve V-twin combination frame # U1613 engine # 47U1613 For 1937 the HD engineers redesigned the Big Twin range: frame and cycle parts of the newly introduced OHV ‘Knucklehead’ were used as the basis for the new 1209 cc models U and UL and the 1303 cc model UH. An important new feature was the introduction (finally!) of dry sump lubrication. The “U” was the 5.0:1 low-compression type; the UL had a compression ratio of 5.5:1. Power output of the U was 32.5 hp @ 4200 rpm and its top speed was 135 km/h. The new models proved themselves as reliable and dependable machines and gave their owners every satisfaction from the start and continued to do so for many years. Improved and updated annually throughout the late 1930s and 1940s, the U and UL models finally disappeared from the range at the end of 1948, the UH version was last produced in 1941. A 1947-only feature was the Bull-Neck frame with its oval section steering head. The gearchange was changed round again so that first was at the back of the gate. Amongst other minor modifications were the red Speed ball tank badges and the Tombstone tail lamp. All 1947 models were also fitted with a new speedometer with a red needle and enlarged numbers to improve readability. Only 422 Us were produced in 1947. (Source: Matthias Gerst). This road-registered mighty U combination has been restored a number of years ago and is in very good condition. She has a three speed gearbox with reverse and the roomy and well-sprung sidecar has a braked wheel. The spare wheel, that was available as an extra, is quickly detachable and interchangeable with the motorcycle wheels. The leatherette cover is adorned with the company logo. This smartly coloured combo comes with big studded leather bags, front and rear crash bars, comfortable 5.00 x 16 tyres and rear view mirror.
