Description VeloSolex 1962ca “2200” 49cc two-stroke single frame # 2692423 engine # 1975196 video: https://youtu.be/I6etJf5DvcM In 1906, Maurice Goudard and Marcel Mennesson start their own company to produce radiators for buses. Mennesson is the technician, Goudard the salesman. Major growth begins in the 1910s when the company starts developing and manufacturing carburettors for automobiles, which are sold under the Solex name. In the 1920s the company grows into a global player. It is unknown what inspires Marcel Mennesson to start working on motorized two-wheelers, but it is a fact that in 1941 he creates a prototype of a 38cc engine, which already possesses all the general characteristics of the later VeloSolex engine. This engine is further developed during the war years and, immediately after the liberation of France, grows into a production-ready model, combined with a matching frame. This leads to the definitive commercial model, which is presented in the spring of 1946 and named the VeloSolex. The VeloSolex becomes one of the most successful mopeds on the European market thanks to several unique features: 1. The VeloSolex is sold as a combination of a simple engine and a sturdy frame, suitable for both men and women. 2. Fuel is supplied to the floatless carburettor by a fuel pump. So, no float to break and no fuel tap to leak. 3. Good service through an extensive network of VeloSolex service stations. 4. Low prices, easy operation. At the end of the 1950s the transistor radio becomes quite popular, and more and more households have a TV. The ORTF (French Radio and Television Office) takes action against the interference caused by the ignition of combustion engines, and the VeloSolex is also subject to this challenge. The 2200 model, released in the summer of 1961, meets the new standards because the spark plug is now completely covered by a black-painted air filter marked 2200 that blocks the radio signal interference. But this isn’t the only improvement, the most important change is invisible: the power has been increased from 0.5 to 0.7 hp, an increase of no less than 40%. The 2200 is the last model with the round frame tube. After producing approximately 2.5 million identical frames, from models 660 to 2200, the production machinery is rather worn out. Research into even lower costs while increasing productivity leads to the introduction of a new type of frame with a square frame tube. This new frame is first used on the 3300 model and shown at the 1964 Paris Motor Show. This basic VeloSolex 2200 is presented in its original, unrestored and running condition and is equipped with a luxurious accessory: a chrome crash bar. The original tools are still in the tool tray under the luggage carrier.
